I would like to know how to replace them. What is the best way to replace old bricks on a brick house the are broken?you can take a dremel tool and cut out the mortar of the broken brick, then pry it out. then you can lay some new mortar on the bottom and sides, install a new brick, and mortar the top, finishing with whatever mortar finish was already there What is the best way to replace old bricks on a brick house the are broken?Hopefully, you have access to some matching bricks.

Look around the home, for brick walkways (yard may have grown over them), planters, decorative items, fence posts, mailbox post/enclosure etc... things that may have been made with extra bricks when the home was built. You may get lucky and find some stashed away in storage, in a crawlspace, or attic. By using bricks that came with the original load, to replace broken bricks, repairs will be less obvious.

Now... before you start replacing bricks, you need to find out WHY you have broken bricks. For example, if some of the bricks broke, in a pattern, and there is a crack in the mortar (especially a staggered crack that runs up at a diagonal), you may have a case where the foundation, or a part of it, has settled. In which case, you should repair that, before repairing the brickwork. If you have a vertical crack near the corner of a wall, it may mean that the bricks (along the side) have pulled loose from the wall, and the home could be at risk of losing a whole section of bricks from the wall, if not attended to.

Ok, assuming everything that could have caused the brick to break in the first place has been repaired, the basic repair is pretty straightforward... you have to dig out the old brick(s), and mortar, and replace it. Dremel tools with a grinder attachment work pretty good at cutting away the mortar, but you may find an air impact chisel and bit are faster. Remove the mortar from around the broken bricks, and they'll pull right out.

Clean up the opening as well as you can. Apply new mortar to the bottom of the opening, and the sides, and press the replacement brick in place. You may find a hammer, or mallet, helpful in helping to tap it down into place. (I've used a chisel, or screwdriver...by laying them across the top of the brick, and while holding the handle, tap down gently on the metal. If you lift the handle just a bit, you can actually tap down on the back side of the brick, even though your hammer won't actually reach in there, hehehe. You're using the longer handled tool to apply the force where you want it.) By the way, I like to add just a bit of mortar to the top of the brick, along the back half, just before I work it in place. Then I don't have to squeeze so much in later.

Don't forget to finish off the mortar like the original work. If its been tooled, you'll need to do it the same. Oh, before you start, make some test mortar to double check the color, and make any changes necessary. (You'll want to clean the old mortar as much as possible first, before comparing colors)

This is more time consuming than anything else. It's not really 'difficult' to do, if you have the patience, heheh.

If you'd like to contract the work out though, then look for someone who can do 'tuckpointing'. %26quot;Repairing%26quot; brickwork actually takes more labor than installing new brick, so not all bricklayers would be interested in bidding on the work, but they can tell you who does good work.

Have FunWhat is the best way to replace old bricks on a brick house the are broken?the best way to remove brick without breaking other brick is to rent a 14 in. in. quickie saw...this will cut deep enough to remove a brick without damaging others...cut the top and bottom bed joints and then chisel out the middle of the brick...now you can chisel the head joints to remove the ends of the brick...What is the best way to replace old bricks on a brick house the are broken?Use drill cut large hole centre of old brick. use drill around edges of old brick before chipping brick out. As usual. You had the correct one. The national electric code allows you two options. Replace the 2 prong receptacle with another 2 prong receptacle. Or install a GFCI receptacle, (not breaker). You will still not have a ground, but the installation will comply with code and not be unsafe. The alternative is to rewire with a 3 conductor circuit. Ground wires must terminate in your electric panel, not on some pipe or such. A GFCI installed on the first receptacle in the circuit can protect any other receptacles down stream. Don't take electrical advise from untrained people. How do you replace a 2 prong oulet with a 3 prong?Hey there....

You really need to make sure you have a good ground connection. If the outlet boxes are metal, you can run a single wire between them, attach it each one with a screw with a serrated lock washer. Run a pigtail(short piece of wire) between the new three prong outlet ground screw and the box(the ground screw will be painted green). Use green, bare or green with a yellow stripe for the wire. 14 Gauge should be adequate for home wiring. Ground all your outlets to a water or gas pipe using a clamp designed for this. Do not forget to clean the paint from the pipe! If you are not sure that your water or gas pipe are deep and metal, drive a separate ground rod. The wooden posts are starting to rot at the base so I want to replace them.

I was thinking of using PT 6x6 posts which I will let dry out and then prime and paint before installation. It seems like a very high estimate to me, but I called another dealer in the area and they said the same thing. Hopefully someone can give me some advice as to what it should cost. :) Thanks! How much should it cost to replace a timing belt on a new style 99 Jetta GL 4 cylinder automatic? The reason they want to replace the water pump is that they have to pull the water pump to replace the timing belt so they don't charge any extra for the labor just the parts (which they mark up) but it is recommended to get it done since it will likely need replacing eventually, cheap insurance. Timing belts replacement is something that annoys me as well and when I buy a car I always try to factor that cost into my buying decision, especially on used cars. If you call three or four different auto mechanics and the price is roughly the same you'll know that's about right. Most mechanics use a guide that tells them how long a specific job will take and bill accordingly.

If you are feeling REALLY adventerous you could find out if your valve train is interference or non-interferance. If the timing belt breaks on an interference engine, the pistons will hit the valves and cause serious damage, as in the engine is toast. On a non-interferance engine, it will usually just stop running at which time you can pay a towing bill and have the belt replaced. A friend on mine is on the original belt in his 91 Honda and now has 175,000 miles on it. He bought a used engine for about $500.00 and plans to replace it himself when the belt gives out.How much should it cost to replace a timing belt on a new style 99 Jetta GL 4 cylinder automatic?Dealer 600-700How much should it cost to replace a timing belt on a new style 99 Jetta GL 4 cylinder automatic?Your car has an %26quot;interference engine%26quot; that will suffer expensive damage if the timing belt breaks. I think the motor is burnt out. I was wondering if anyone knew how hard it was to just take the disposal out and replace it with regular pipe. Is this something that I could do myself or would I have to hire a plumber. Any advice would be a big help. Thanks in advance to all who will take time to pass their advice on.How do I replace a garbage disposal with regular piping?Garbage disposals are detrimental to the sewer system, garbage belongs in the garbage can, many local authorities have banned their replacement, if you want to keep taxes down, it costs to treat everything that goes into the drain. First, SHUT OFF THE ELECTRIC, if you can't, forget about doing the job. Open the box where the wire enters the disposal, disconnect the wires and place wire nuts and electrical tape over them. Cut the pipe that leads to the wall, just after the u-shaped bend. Support the disposal, Hit the ring at the top of the disposal, counterclockwise, or put a screwdriver into one of the loops and twist. Take the back end of the pipe you cut off the u-bend[trap], to the home store and ask for a Fernco fitting to attach the pipe out of the wall to the new trap, purchase the trap, preferably plastic; the tailpiece, and the basket strainer to go into the sink opening, use silicone caulk to install the strainer, they will tell you to use plumbers putty, don't. Good Luck! How do I replace a garbage disposal with regular piping?try turning the disposal with the wrench that came with it, push the little red reset button at the bottom, check the breaker, will it run now ? to remove it take disposal loose theres a ring that holds it on turn it counter clock wise, unplug disposal, then you can hook up regular pipes to the sink drain,How do I replace a garbage disposal with regular piping?Just remove the disposal ,and any wiring, and connect remaining pipes with a short length of pipe.
