How do I replace a fuel pump in a Mercruiser 898 sterndrive?

I have a 1978 Mark Twain 180v, with a Chevy 305 cid on a Mercruiser 898 Sterndrive. The fuel pump is out and I need to replace. My only problem is that I have no idea how and do not have a manual. If anybody can help, please do.How do I replace a fuel pump in a Mercruiser 898 sterndrive? The same way as on a 305 or 350 chevy car engine.

Gasket on surface, pump lever in the block and tilt the pump so the lever goes under the cam lobe, tighten the bolts and reconnect the lines.

One note: be sure NOT to use a car fuel pump, the marine version has an extra port (diaphragm vent) that routes by a fuel hose to the carburetor top, when the diaphragm in the pump fails and it starts to leak this extra port dumps the fuel into the carb instead into the boat! How do I replace a fuel pump in a Mercruiser 898 sterndrive? When U remove it the rod will slid down U will have to lift it up and hold it so the arm on the pump pushes it up if not the pump will not work and damage will incur. How do I replace a fuel pump in a Mercruiser 898 sterndrive?frank m nailed it.

follow the fuel hose down from the carb. you'll find a pump on the side of the motor with 2 bolts holding it on.

unbolt it, clean the old gasket off the motor and install the new one with a new gasket.

as frank said, you need a MARINE pump, not one purchases at an auto parts store. an automotive pump is not designed with the same thoughs of fumes and fire as a marine pump is.

on a big block chevy, you would however need to worry about a push rod between the pump and the cam that drives it. but not on a small block, such as a 305.
