How do you replace a doorknob to a bedroom or bathroom door?

My bedroom doorknob is stripped and stuck in one position :) I need to replace it before my lease expires at my apartment and I'm not a handy girl but I can try.How do you replace a doorknob to a bedroom or bathroom door?It sounds like it may just be the latch that needs to be replaced....but it's easy enough to replace the whole set.

You need a screwdriver (most use a phillips screw (+) )

Some door knob sets, have a cover place over the screws that hold the door knob set to the door. A butter knife, or putty knife, places under the edge, can pop this off for you. If you have this type, then the knob itself will need to be removed first.... look at the knob... where it is smallest.... if there is a small slot, with a metal tab in it... you need to take a flat screwdriver, and press in on that tab... it is holding the knob handle in place... If you press in on the tab, and pull on the handle, it will slide off by pulling on it. Once the knob is off, pop the base cover plate off, and you will find the two phillips screws there.

Some door knob sets do not bother hiding the phillips screws... these are the easiest to replace...

With the door open, unscrew the two screws... you may notice that the knob on the other side wants to back out, as you are taking these out... you can hold the knob in place, to make it easier to remove the screws. These screws will be about 2 inches long.... so dont be surprised, hehhehe.

Once the screws are out, the door knobs will pull apart. One half will have the posts that the the screws had been in. Note that half....those posts slide into the latch mechanism, helping to hold it in place.

Most interior doors do not use a screwed in place latch.... its just a press fit... if you put your screwdriver thru the hole where the door knob was, and tap it lightly on the side with a hammer, the latch will pop right out. If the latch has a plate in the edge of the door, then you will need to take those two screw out... theyll be short ones.

I would suggest that then you take the whole thing to your local hardware store, to get another one, like it. Most bedroom knob sets do not cost a whole lot.... between $10 and $15 is the norm. Again, you may be able to get just a new latch, if that is what is broken... the clerk at the store should be able to tell you this.

Once you have the new hardware, it goes back into the door, the reverse order of how you took it out... the latch goes in first. If it was a press fit... simply tap it in place... lol.. and make sure it is pointed in the right direction, lol. The latch bolt should have the curved, or angled side, facing towards the door frame, as you would close the door. Then, slide the knob with the posts in it, thru the latch bolt. Put the other half on, and insert your screws. It may help to leave the knob out just a bit, so you can start the screws in those posts. Once you have the screws started, run them both in, a little at a time, switching back and forth, between the two screws.

If you had the type of knob that has a cover plate.... then you put it back on... a slight tap, should seat it properly, then slide the knob back on.

That's all there is to it. It's an easy fix, and you shouldnt have any trouble with it.
