How tough is it to replace a garage door opener?

My GDO is on it's last lag. It needs to be replaced. The door and tracks are in good shape. I was wondering how difficult it would be to remove the existing GDO and replace it with a new one.

Is this a DIY project or should I have someone else do it?

What are the biggest problems I could run into and how do I avoid them?

What size is needed for a single door, 2 car garage?

Thanks! How tough is it to replace a garage door opener?Replacing a garage door opener is a fairly easy project. All of the openers I have seen recently have really good instructions. The biggest problem would be a door that is not operating smoothly. It sounds like yours is in good shape so you should get along fine.

If the door is operating properly, the opener does not actually have to lift much weight, even with a larger door. The door springs should take most of it. A 1/3 HP opener should be more than enough but 1/2 HP units are not very much more in price, so that is the way I would go. Many stores don't even carry anything other than 1/2 HP anymore. How tough is it to replace a garage door opener?if u are putting it in your self it is verryy hard my dad is actrually in the process and he regrets wanting to put on e in lol

You do that by pulling the release handle on the door opener and then open the door by hand. It should open easily and not bind up anywhere.
